Somewhere in the Middle of Nowhere

The book does not treat emptiness as absence. Instead, it examines how human presence becomes more visible when reduced to its smallest traces: a solitary basketball hoop, an unfinished road, a figure crossing an open plain, an abandoned vehicle or a fragment of architecture resisting the scale of the landscape. These modest signs of life reveal a tension between endurance and vulnerability, movement and stillness, belonging and displacement.

Photographed across remote regions of Mongolia, the series moves between documentary observation and visual metaphor. Each image is grounded in a real place or encounter, yet the sequencing creates a broader reflection on what it means to inhabit spaces where permanence appears uncertain. Human figures often occupy only a small part of the frame—not to diminish them, but to emphasize their relationship with an environment that remains largely indifferent to human scale.

The rhythm of the book alternates between expansive landscapes, temporary structures, solitary gestures and moments of understated irony. Roads seem to lead nowhere, objects appear detached from their expected purpose, and signs of modern life emerge in places where they seem both necessary and strangely out of place. Together, these images form a narrative about persistence: people continue to travel, work, build and play, even when the horizon offers no obvious destination.

Rather than presenting Mongolia as an exotic or untouched territory, the book considers how individuals negotiate remoteness, change and uncertainty within an immense physical environment. Somewhere in the Middle of Nowhere is ultimately a study of presence—of how the smallest human intervention can transform an apparently empty landscape into a place of memory, possibility and meaning.
