Workshops
Life in the Streets of Istanbul
A small-group street photography experience focused on observation, timing, and capturing authentic moments in the historic heart of Istanbul.
Join me for a private street photography workshop in Istanbul, designed for photographers who want to deepen the way
they see and photograph life in the streets.
During this personalized session we explore carefully selected locations in the historic parts of the city, observing how
light, movement, and human interaction shape compelling photographs. Rather than focusing on technical camera basics, the workshop emphasizes visual awareness, timing, composition, and anticipating moments in real urban environments.
Throughout the day I share my approach to working in the street — how to read a scene, simplify complex environments, and build stronger images through observation and patience.
In the afternoon we reconvene in my studio for a review and critique of the photographs taken during the day, discussing image
selection, framing, and ways to strengthen visual storytelling.
My goal is to help you see the city differently and return with photographs that reflect your own vision and experience of Istanbul.
During the workshop we focus on developing a stronger awareness of how to photograph everyday life in the streets.
Topics we explore throughout the day include:
Seeing and anticipating moments
Learning how to read a scene and recognize when something meaningful or visually interesting is about to happen.
Working with light in urban environments
Understanding how light, shadows, and reflections shape strong street photographs.
Composition in complex environments
Simplifying busy scenes and building clear visual structures within the frame.
Timing and human gesture
Recognizing the small moments that bring life and emotion into a photograph.
Approaching people and photographing in public spaces
Discussing different ways of working confidently and respectfully in street photography situations.
Editing and selecting images
During the critique session we discuss how to evaluate photographs, identify stronger frames, and refine visual storytelling.
Frequently Asked Questions
What level of photography experience is required?
This workshop is designed for photographers who are already comfortable operating their camera and would like to deepen their approach to street and documentary photography.
The focus is not on technical basics such as shutter speed, aperture, or ISO, but on observation, timing, composition, and working with real-life moments in urban environments.
How many participants are in a workshop?
Workshops are intentionally kept very small and personal.
- Private session: 1 participant
- Small group: maximum participants
Small groups allow for more discussion, feedback, and individual guidance throughout the day.
How long does the workshop last?
The workshop is structured in two parts:
Morning session
Approximately 3–3.5 hours of street photography in carefully selected locations in Old Istanbul (the Historic Peninsula), with a short coffee break.
Afternoon session
Later in the day we meet again at my studio for an image review and critique session.
The full experience typically runs from around 09:00 until approximately 18:00, with a break in the middle of the day.
What should I bring?
Participants should bring:
- their camera
- comfortable walking shoes
- extra batteries and memory cards
Any camera system is fine. The workshop focuses on seeing and photographing moments, not on specific equipment.
What happens during the critique session?
In the afternoon session we review a selection of photographs taken during the day.
We discuss:
- image selection
- composition and framing
- timing and gesture
- ways to strengthen the photograph
Participants are usually asked to bring 5–10 images from the day for discussion.
What if the weather is bad?
Street photography can work in many different conditions, and changing weather often creates interesting photographic opportunities. However, if severe weather makes the workshop impractical, we can reschedule to another available date.
Can the workshop be customized?
Yes. Since the workshops are private or very small groups, the route and focus can be adapted depending on participants’ interests and photographic goals.
How much walking is involved?
The workshop involves moderate walking over several hours through the streets of historic Istanbul, with a coffee break during the session. Comfortable shoes are recommended.
What if I feel my photography is not strong enough?
Many participants join the workshop because they want to improve their ability to see and respond to moments in the street. The goal is not to produce perfect photographs, but to develop a stronger awareness of light, timing, and composition in real environments.
As long as you are comfortable operating your camera, the workshop is designed to help you refine your observational skills and
photographic approach through guided shooting and constructive discussion.
What languages are the workshops conducted in?
Workshops can be conducted in English or Turkish.
